Full Chat podcast: McFly’s Dougie Poynter on his newfound love of motorcycles

Dougie Poynter

McFly’s Dougie Poynter joins hosts David Prutton and Iwan Thomas on motorcycling podcast Full Chat to discuss his career and newly discovered passion for bikes.

Poynter is best known for being one quarter of the chart-topping band McFly, famous for songs such as Five Colours in Her Hair, All About You and Obviously.

The bass guitarist sat down with Thomas and Prutton to discuss his recent love for motorbikes thanks to band-mate Danny Jones, the bike tours he wants to go on and becoming king of the jungle like Bikesure ambassador Carl Fogarty.

Dougie Poynter falling in love with motorcycles

During the episode, Poynter revealed how he’s fallen for motorcycles and why he’s planning to ride through Morocco with band-mate Jones.

“I had no idea that I was going to enjoy riding this much!” Poynter exclaimed.

“Even commuting to our studio which is about 20 minutes away from me, even that commute I absolutely love, thinking about what corners are coming up.

“Yesterday I probably had the best ride I’ve ever done. It felt like spring and me and my mate Dave, who is McFly’s videographer, tried doing some green laning, but failed miserably.

“It was all over the place and there were a lot of really deep puddles which just looked like little mini lakes, so we gave up on green laning.

“We’re planning this year once I’ve passed (his test) and it gets a bit warmer, we’re planning all of our trips, we already want to ride to Morocco.

“I’ve now got my dream bike, as someone who has only ridden my 125 and 650 that I did my mod one on, just basing it on aesthetics and heritage is the Triumph Bonneville.

“The older they are, the better, they’re the ones that I obsess over and search online for like cool custom versions and I’ve learnt about the history of them.

“I’ve also been obsessed with nature my entire life and now because of motorcycling, I’ve been outside more than ever, even in the winter. Usually I stay indoors and wait for spring, I pretty much hibernate, but yesterday even though it was freezing cold still, the sun was out and I was out all day, and we’re going through hills and I was grinning the whole way round.”
